The “Venise Verte” (Green Venice) represents 8,000 km of waterways (including 350 km that are signposted) in a cathedral of greenery, ideal place for a boat ride in the shade of ash trees.
Make your choice : boat, canoe or kayak. The traditional boat is called here « plate » (flat barque) and you can hire one at the many piers in the marsh.
You can then choose to travel alone along the marked paths or accompanied by a boatman guide.
Trips with a boatman guide
Embark with a boatman guide who will row for you and also give you all the keys to discover the marsh: reading the landscape, discovery of fauna and flora. The boatman will even give you a demonstration of fire on water, a kind of magical appearance. Immerse yourself in the history of the marsh and discover this fascinating environment shaped by men.
For this guided tour, choose from the jetties of the Green Venice. Several durations are proposed but often at fixed times only. Do not forget to book in advance.
You can also embark without an accompanying guide for a moment of discovery at your own pace with family or friends. On the jetties, you are offered different routes marked with signs. The boats can be rented for 1 hour, up to 2 or 3 hours and even for a full day. Do not worry, a map and signposts on the site will allow you to find your way easily in this maze of greenery.
Enjoy the well-equipped picnic areas accessible by only waterways … quietness guaranteed. You can request barrels to keep your picnic and belongings dry.
The boats can accommodate an average of 8 persons.
Canoe and kayak trips allow total immersion in the Green Venice. Due to their small size, you can penetrate into the ditches (the smaller canals) and play Indiana Jones between the ash trees and the eels (endangered species) or the coons if you have the chance to see them.
- Order the nautical map « Strolls along the water »
This map will allow owners of canoes to prepare their routes on the waterways of the Marais Poitevin.
