A unique site in the heart of the Marais, in La Grève-sur-Mignon
Discover the way of the clay : from the Marais… to the bricks, in this unique site that shows major economic activities that have now disappeared!
The subsoil of the Marais Poitevin consists essentially of “bri”, a grey-coloured clay. This excellent quality clay has been exploited and transformed into tiles and bricks from a long time ago. Each village in the Wet Marais had at least one tile factory, more or less productive. That of the La Grève-sur-Mignon was one of the largest in the territory in number of workers, size and volume of production.
The Hoffmann kiln is a continuous oven unique in Poitou Charentes. It was restored to accommodate a museum space.
Discover how the clay was transported, processed and baked in the Hoffmann kiln. During your visit you will be amazed by the hard work, ingenuity and generosity of these women and men who were able to draw sustenance from the clay of the marsh.
The tour ends with an evocation of the new inhabitants of the tile factory, i.e. the bats belonging to several species that regularly visit the site.
Open weekends in spring and autumn and daily in July and August.
